Taming a Fear of the Dentist
- Keep regular exams (twice a year) – This helps with anxiety for a few reasons. One, the more time you spend in a space, the more acclimated you become to it. Two, the more dental exams you have, the more routine and non-threatening they feel. And three, with regular exams, you have a lower chance of experiencing decay and needing a filling.
- Find an office that makes you comfortable – Every dental practice has something different to offer. Take a little time and do some research until you find one that fits.
- Stay on top of your brushing and flossing – Excellent oral hygiene means a cavity-free mouth! If you’ve been brushing and flossing well and regularly, you won’t feel like you have something to hide from your hygienist, and you’ll be less concerned about the chance of disease.
- Voice your fears – Half the time, there’s something we can do to help alleviate your concern. But we need you to articulate what it is that you’re nervous about. If you let us know what’s bothering you when thinking about upcoming treatment, we may be able to find a way to help.
