Sometimes replacing teeth above the gum line isn’t sufficient. Dentures, partials, and bridges can always benefit from additional support. Dental implants act as anchors for restorations, attaching to the jaw bone to become an interconnected part of your mouth. Once implants are in place, they can remain with you for life.
Choosing Teeth Implants
After a tooth is lost, the area around the gap begins to change. The neighboring teeth shift, moving to fill the empty space. Plaque gathers, causing decay and periodontal disease. The jaw bone that once attached to the tooth root begins to dissolve and weaken.
Placing a dental implant prevents these issues. An implant is a titanium screw that is set in the jaw. It then begins to integrate with the bone’s tissue. Once the area has healed, the implant will act as a uniquely powerful source of restorative support. Deciding to get one or more dental implants will not only fill out your smile, it will preserve your bone density, oral health, and bite alignment.
Preparing For Dental Implants
There are several preparatory steps that may need to be taken prior to implant placement.
- Bone graft – Because the jaw bone begins to resorb when a tooth is lost, the patient’s bone density may not be adequate to support an implant. In this case, a bone graft will augment the placement site and allow an implant to succeed.
- Filling cavities – Implant placement is surgical, and will only be performed if the mouth is healthy and free of infection. This requires any existing tooth decay to be removed, and cavities filled.
- Periodontal treatment – Bacteria, plaque, and infected tissue could lead to complications after implant surgery. A gum disease-afflicted mouth must be brought back to health prior to the procedure.
Implant-Supported Dental Restorations
Dental implants may be paired with nearly any dental restoration to rebuild entire teeth. A few of the most common pairings include
- Implant-Supported Crown
- Implant-Supported Bridge
- Implant-Supported Removable Partial Denture or Complete Denture
